Arab Canadian Lawyers Association - “After the Arab Spring: Will Justice and Human Rights Prevail in Egypt?”

The Arab Canadian Lawyers Association presents:

“After the Arab Spring:  Will Justice and Human Rights Prevail in Egypt?”

6:30 Reception with members of ACLA

7:00 (sharp) Lecture

Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham Street, Toronto

It has been more than a year since Hosni Mubarak was ousted from his 30-year reign of Egypt; however, the revolution for human rights and justice is far from over. Today Egypt is at crossroads that will shape the future of its citizens. The tensions between religion and politics, the military and democrats, law and emergency rule are in constant flux. In the middle are Egypt’s human rights advocates who are trying to ensure the principles of the revolution are upheld, and a post-Mubarak Egypt brings true democratic changes for the country. The small victories achieved have been accompanied by numerous setbacks such as the harassment of human rights NGOs.  The panellists will discuss the role of the rule of law in establishing democratic reforms in Egypt, and whether human rights will be enshrined by the new government or will the Mubarak regime continue without him. The panellists will also provide an on-the-ground account of the challenges facing Egypt and human rights advocates, and what needs to be achieved in order to close the chapter on authoritarian rule in Egypt.

Bahey El-Din Hassan

Reem A. Bahdi

Professor Reem Bahdi joined Windsor University’s Faculty of Law in 2002, teaching Access to Justice and Torts. Her current research focuses on two areas: human rights dimensions of national security laws and policies in Canada; and access to justice in the Palestinian context. Professor Bahdi is Co-Director of KARAMAH, The Project on Judicial Independence and Human Dignity, a multi-million dollar initiative which aims to support access to justice in Palestine through research, continuing judicial education and directed civil society engagement.  She is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Windsor Yearbook of Access to Justice. Professor Bahdi has also been an advisor to ACLA since it was founded in 2005, and a long-time advocate for the Arab-Canadian community.

ACLA thanks the following organizations for their generous support in putting this event together:

The Windsor-Birzeit Dignity Initiative is an international, interdisciplinary research partnership housed at the University of Windsor (Canada) and Birzeit University (Palestine) that focuses on studying and institutionalizing human dignity in the Arab world.

Beit Zatoun is a cultural centre, gallery and community meeting space that promotes the interplay of art, culture and politics to explore issues of social justice and human rights, both locally and internationally.
A long-time advocate for Egypt's human rights movement, Bahey el-din Hassan established the Egyptian Organisation for Human Rights and is the co-founder and Director of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies. Mr. Hassan has been fighting the human rights abuses of the Mubarak regime for more than 20 years. His dedication to advocating for human rights, raising awareness, and mobilising key players and NGOs across the region has earned him the label "the father of the Egyptian Human Rights Movement." Declining the post of Deputy Interior Minister for Human Rights in July 2011, Mr. Hassan remains steadfast in his determination to defend human rights and democracy in Egypt. He is also lecturer and author of articles and papers on human rights and democratic transformation in the Arab region.

ACCLO is please to recommend to members Jan Wong's new book, "Out of the Blue" due out May 5, 2012.

For more information, see Jan Wong's website:

For twenty years, Jan Wong had been one of her newspaper’s best-known reporters. Then one day she turned in a story that set off a firestorm of controversy, including death threats, a unanimous denunciation by Parliament and a rebuke by her own newspaper. For the first time in her professional life, Wong fell into a severe clinical depression. Yet she resisted the diagnosis, refusing to believe she had a mental illness. As it turned out, so did her company and insurer. With wit, grace and insight, Jan Wong tells the harrowing tale of her struggle with workplace-caused depression, and of her eventual emergence … Out of the Blue.

Articling Task Force’s Consultation Report – Submissions Due March 15, 2012.

From the LSUC website:

The Articling Task Force considered the importance of ensuring transitional training, which is currently articling, has objective and demonstrable standards and does not have the unintended effect of creating unfair barriers to licensing. Those who clearly qualify should not be denied access to the profession simply because they lack an articling placement.

The task force has prepared a consultation report to seek the profession’s comments on five possible options for addressing the issues, as follows:

Option 1:  Maintain the status quo (Articling Requirement as it exists)
Option 2:  Maintain the status quo with quality assurance improvements (measurement tools to assess the delivery and acquisition of the program objectives)
Option 3:  Replace a pre-licensing transition requirement with a post-licensing transition requirement
Option 4: Introduce a choice of either an articling requirement or a practical legal training course (PLTC) requirement (“after law school” model or “during law school” model)
Option 5:  Introduce only a practical legal training course (PLTC) requirement

The Articling Task Force welcomes comments on all these and any additional proposed options. Participation of the profession and other interested organizations will contribute to a constructive process and meaningful solutions. The deadline for written comments is March 15, 2012.

It's Time To Help! Volunteer Chinese Lawyer Needed - Part 2

Further to our February 3/2012 blog, the ACCLO has been approached by Pro Bono Law Ontario (PBLO) to assist with the provision of summary advice in Mandarin and Cantonese at PBLO’s court-based help centres known as Law Help Ontario (LHO).

Each year, LHO serves thousands of low-income, self-represented litigants with civil (non-family) matters in the Superior Court of Justice and Small Claims Court.  PBLO has advised that of clients whose first language is not English, Chinese speakers are the most common.

If you are bilingual/trilingual and have any experience in civil matters, please consider this opportunity to assist self-represented litigants in our community who must navigate the civil justice system on their own.  Your time and expertise, in whatever capacity, would be greatly appreciated and accommodated.  I know that many of us would like the opportunity to help our community and engage in pro bono work but just do not know where to start --- how about now?

At this time, please contact me at rtsao@epsteincole.com if you are interested in volunteering at LHO to provide brief summary advice at either 393 University Avenue (Superior Court) or 47 Sheppard Avenue East (Small Claims Court) in Cantonese or Mandarin.   Those interested in volunteering at the Superior Court centre should be familiar with the Rules of Civil Procedure and court process.

We look forward to your support.

2012 Gala Guest of Honour: Dr. Lap-Chee Tsui, OC.

The FCCP is honoured to have Dr. Tsui as our Guest of Honour at the 2012 Gala to be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012.

Dr. Tsui has had a long and illustrious career and while his achievements are numerous, he is no doubt best known for heading the team which discovered the gene that causes cystic fibrosis in 1989.

An incomplete and short list of some background information available on Dr. Tsui includes:
Of course, in today's age, Dr. Tsui has his own Wikipedia page, here.

Below is the introduction to Dr. Tsui as found in the 2012 Canadian Medical Hall of Fame induction

Driven by a commitment to science, and a creative approach to difficult problems, Dr. Lap‐Chee Tsui made what is described as the most significant breakthrough in human genetics in 50 years, namely the discovery of the cystic fibrosis gene. Born in Shanghai, China, studied in Hong Kong and USA, and coming to Canada in the early 80s, Dr. Tsui is an innovator, mentor and role model who stands as a true giant in the field of human genetics. He has made extraordinary contributions to science through his discoveries and is a leader in developing the field of genomics in Canada and internationally. Indeed, his contributions reach round the world to the countless people afflicted with cystic fibrosis (CF), offering new hope for diagnosis and treatment.

The decade‐long march to discover the cystic fibrosis gene began when Dr. Tsui arrived in Canada and applied a new theory called genetic linkage to map the most common inherited disease affecting Caucasians: cystic fibrosis. The work of Dr. Tsui, in collaboration with Dr. John Riordan at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children and Dr. Francis Collins at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Michigan, led to mapping the CF gene to chromosome 7. The discovery, published in three foundational papers in 1989, alerted the scientific community to the powerful new tools now available for the study of inherited disease. One of the most closely watched endeavours in all of science, the search for the gene was regularly featured in scientific journals and mainstream media.

Building on the foundational work done in the discovery of the CF gene, Dr. Tsui has remained a leading figure in CF research. His research group has created the most comprehensive map of chromosome 7, which is particularly rich with disease‐causing mutations. This has led to further discoveries by Dr. Tsui’s group in Toronto and by many collaborators around the world. Dr. Tsui’s laboratory also developed the free‐chromatin mapping method and pioneered other techniques that have made a huge impact in genomics research.

With his unique combination of leadership and humility, Dr. Tsui has taken on an international role in the development of the human genome project and in the formation of Genome Canada, so essential to the development of Canadian biomedical research. Throughout his career, Dr. Tsui has always been deeply engaged in the work and careers of the scientists in his program. His successful legacy will not only be measured as a researcher but also in shaping future leaders of human genetics research.

Dr. Tsui’s scientific achievements have been recognized worldwide, including a Gairdner International Award in 1990, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of London and an Officer of the Order of Canada, as well as honours from numerous universities and scientific and medical societies throughout the world.
