Further to our February 3/2012 blog, the ACCLO has been approached by Pro Bono Law Ontario (PBLO) to assist with the provision of summary advice in Mandarin and Cantonese at PBLO’s court-based help centres known as Law Help Ontario (LHO).
Each year, LHO serves thousands of low-income, self-represented litigants with civil (non-family) matters in the Superior Court of Justice and Small Claims Court. PBLO has advised that of clients whose first language is not English, Chinese speakers are the most common.
If you are bilingual/trilingual and have any experience in civil matters, please consider this opportunity to assist self-represented litigants in our community who must navigate the civil justice system on their own. Your time and expertise, in whatever capacity, would be greatly appreciated and accommodated. I know that many of us would like the opportunity to help our community and engage in pro bono work but just do not know where to start --- how about now?
At this time, please contact me at rtsao@epsteincole.com if you are interested in volunteering at LHO to provide brief summary advice at either 393 University Avenue (Superior Court) or 47 Sheppard Avenue East (Small Claims Court) in Cantonese or Mandarin. Those interested in volunteering at the Superior Court centre should be familiar with the Rules of Civil Procedure and court process.
We look forward to your support.
