It's Time To Help! Volunteer Chinese Lawyer Needed - Part 2

Further to our February 3/2012 blog, the ACCLO has been approached by Pro Bono Law Ontario (PBLO) to assist with the provision of summary advice in Mandarin and Cantonese at PBLO’s court-based help centres known as Law Help Ontario (LHO).

Each year, LHO serves thousands of low-income, self-represented litigants with civil (non-family) matters in the Superior Court of Justice and Small Claims Court.  PBLO has advised that of clients whose first language is not English, Chinese speakers are the most common.

If you are bilingual/trilingual and have any experience in civil matters, please consider this opportunity to assist self-represented litigants in our community who must navigate the civil justice system on their own.  Your time and expertise, in whatever capacity, would be greatly appreciated and accommodated.  I know that many of us would like the opportunity to help our community and engage in pro bono work but just do not know where to start --- how about now?

At this time, please contact me at rtsao@epsteincole.com if you are interested in volunteering at LHO to provide brief summary advice at either 393 University Avenue (Superior Court) or 47 Sheppard Avenue East (Small Claims Court) in Cantonese or Mandarin.   Those interested in volunteering at the Superior Court centre should be familiar with the Rules of Civil Procedure and court process.

We look forward to your support.

2012 Gala Guest of Honour: Dr. Lap-Chee Tsui, OC.

The FCCP is honoured to have Dr. Tsui as our Guest of Honour at the 2012 Gala to be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012.

Dr. Tsui has had a long and illustrious career and while his achievements are numerous, he is no doubt best known for heading the team which discovered the gene that causes cystic fibrosis in 1989.

An incomplete and short list of some background information available on Dr. Tsui includes:
Of course, in today's age, Dr. Tsui has his own Wikipedia page, here.

Below is the introduction to Dr. Tsui as found in the 2012 Canadian Medical Hall of Fame induction

Driven by a commitment to science, and a creative approach to difficult problems, Dr. Lap‐Chee Tsui made what is described as the most significant breakthrough in human genetics in 50 years, namely the discovery of the cystic fibrosis gene. Born in Shanghai, China, studied in Hong Kong and USA, and coming to Canada in the early 80s, Dr. Tsui is an innovator, mentor and role model who stands as a true giant in the field of human genetics. He has made extraordinary contributions to science through his discoveries and is a leader in developing the field of genomics in Canada and internationally. Indeed, his contributions reach round the world to the countless people afflicted with cystic fibrosis (CF), offering new hope for diagnosis and treatment.

The decade‐long march to discover the cystic fibrosis gene began when Dr. Tsui arrived in Canada and applied a new theory called genetic linkage to map the most common inherited disease affecting Caucasians: cystic fibrosis. The work of Dr. Tsui, in collaboration with Dr. John Riordan at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children and Dr. Francis Collins at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Michigan, led to mapping the CF gene to chromosome 7. The discovery, published in three foundational papers in 1989, alerted the scientific community to the powerful new tools now available for the study of inherited disease. One of the most closely watched endeavours in all of science, the search for the gene was regularly featured in scientific journals and mainstream media.

Building on the foundational work done in the discovery of the CF gene, Dr. Tsui has remained a leading figure in CF research. His research group has created the most comprehensive map of chromosome 7, which is particularly rich with disease‐causing mutations. This has led to further discoveries by Dr. Tsui’s group in Toronto and by many collaborators around the world. Dr. Tsui’s laboratory also developed the free‐chromatin mapping method and pioneered other techniques that have made a huge impact in genomics research.

With his unique combination of leadership and humility, Dr. Tsui has taken on an international role in the development of the human genome project and in the formation of Genome Canada, so essential to the development of Canadian biomedical research. Throughout his career, Dr. Tsui has always been deeply engaged in the work and careers of the scientists in his program. His successful legacy will not only be measured as a researcher but also in shaping future leaders of human genetics research.

Dr. Tsui’s scientific achievements have been recognized worldwide, including a Gairdner International Award in 1990, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of London and an Officer of the Order of Canada, as well as honours from numerous universities and scientific and medical societies throughout the world.

Linsanity Comes to Toronto!

The Globe and Mail reports that the media requests for Jeremy Lin are so extensive that they’re reserving a private room for Jeremy alone, for post-game interviews.  The last time they did it was for the trinity of LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Toronto nemesis, Chris Bosh.

Jeremy’s on a roll and we’re loving it.

Jeremy’s in town on Valentine’s Day and the ACC is sold out for the first time since opening day.

Here’s to hoping Jeremy scores a triple-double and the Raptors squeak out with a win.

Pro Bono Law Ontario Initiative – Volunteer Chinese Lawyers Needed

The Association for Chinese Canadian Lawyers (ACCLO) and Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (FACL) are seeking to partner with Pro Bono Law Ontario (PBLO) to host periodic summary advice clinics at PBLO’s court-based help centres known as Law Help Ontario (LHO).

Each year, LHO serves thousands of low-income, self-represented litigants with civil, non-family matters in the Superior Court of Justice and Small Claims Court.  Apparently, the need for assistance among those in the Chinese community is significant.

Will you participate in this project as a volunteer lawyer?

Interested lawyers should be prepared to spend one full day providing brief summary advice at an LHO centre in Toronto, TBA.

Volunteers at the Superior Court centre should be full-time civil litigators.

Please indicate your interest in this project by emailing Carol at csuen@bcbarristers.com. Thank you in advance for your support.
